Lamorne Morris joins Fox’s ‘New Girl’

Lamorne Morris has joined the cast of Fox’s fall comedy New Girl.

The show stars Zooey Deschanel as Jessica, a teacher who moves in with three men after a break-up.

Morris has signed up to play Winston, a former basketball player who owns Jessica’s new apartment, TV Guide reports.

When he moves back to town, he kicks out one of Jessica’s roommates, Coach, who had been subletting the room.

Coach was played by Damon Wayans Jr in the pilot but he is unable to continue working on the show because his ABC series Happy Endings was renewed.

New Girl‘s executive producer Liz Meriwether described Morris as “a young Eddie Murphy”, adding: “He has this kind of great manic comedic energy. And he has amazing improv skills. I love that about our cast – all of our actors can think on their feet.”

Meriwether also explained that the cast and crew would have had to “reshoot about 80%” of the pilot if they removed Wayans’s character completely.

“It felt thematically that it made sense to have people move in and out of the apartment,” she continued. “In your 20s, things are transient anyway. You’re surfing Craigslist for a new roommate. It kind of worked to have Damon be subletting and then moved out. And that freed us up to focus on moving forward, as opposed to going back and creating everything. That would have been a tough way to start.”

Morris will make his debut on New Girl in the second episode of the season. The show will premiere on September 20 on Fox.

New Girl

Series Premiere TUE 9/8c SEPT 20

JESS DAY (Zooey Deschanel, “(500) Days of Summer”) is an offbeat and adorable girl in her late 20s who, after a bad breakup, moves in with three single guys. Goofy, positive, vulnerable and honest to a fault, Jess has faith in people, even when she shouldn’t. Although she’s dorky and awkward, she’s comfortable in her own skin. More prone to friendships with women, she’s not used to hanging with the boys – especially at home.
